Published On Mar 16, 2016By Lisa Pradhan

Indian auto giant, Tata Motors, is going to supply 25 units of its Starbus Hybrid bus models to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which the auto maker had presented at the Indian Auto Expo 2016. Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director at Tata Motors recently made this announcement at a seminar in Mumbai.

“With this indigenously developed city bus, we are extremely pleased to partner MMRDA for 25 such buses , for a shared vision of sustainable cost-efficient transport solutions,” stated Mr. Pisharody and also added that, “with electric mobility as a solution for the future, we are fully geared to cater to the huge potential arising for these technologies, right here in India.”

Tests have been done on the vehicle in India and other global areas to check its performance. In 2010, Delhi Transport Corporation had these buses placed on a trial during Commonwealth games. Meanwhile, the buses have also seen rigid tests in the global arena, having covered more than 4,00,000 kilometres of operation in Madrid, Spain

This bus model is the world's first commercially produced hybrid bus that runs on electric and CNG modes. The electric driven vehicle will produce zero emissions, and will also adhere to BS-IV norms. Talking about its structure and working, it is a full low-floor 40mm bus. It has a single-deck design comprising two rigid sections that are attached by a pivoting joint. The manufacturer claims that the model's design was also oriented towards an eco-friendly one.

MMRDA will be utilising these buses to connect the business district of Bandra Kurla complex to the surrounding areas and railway stations.
